Project overview

BuildMatMart is a marketplace for building materials and construction supplies in Australia, connecting local suppliers and providers with buyers looking for materials nearby. The platform needed a sophisticated subscription and monetisation model, location-based delivery control, and a flexible purchasing flow that goes far beyond Sharetribe's default capabilities.

We delivered the full platform on Sharetribe in 1 week — including a complete subscription tier system, quota-based featured listings, make an offer functionality, and delivery radius enforcement.

The Challenges

BuildMatMart required a complex subscription and monetisation architecture alongside location-based commerce features — none available natively in Sharetribe.

  • Subscription tiers with tiered commission — providers are charged commission based on their subscription tier, with the first 3 months free via Stripe coupons

  • Quota-based featured listings — each tier includes a limited quota for featuring products on the landing page and search results. Once consumed, users can purchase additional quota on a per-unit basis

  • Free user quota purchases — even users on the free plan can buy additional featured listing quota without upgrading

  • Make an offer — buyers can submit custom price offers alongside the standard purchase flow

  • Location filter with radius control — search page includes location-based filtering with an adjustable radius slider

  • Seller delivery radius — each seller sets their own delivery range, and buyers outside that radius are blocked from completing checkout

Our Approach

The most complex part of the build was the subscription and quota system. We engineered a tiered subscription model where each tier has a different commission rate and a set number of featured listing quotas. Featured products appear prominently on the landing page and in search results, giving paying providers maximum visibility. Stripe coupons were used to offer the first 3 months free — lowering the barrier for new providers to onboard.

When a provider exhausts their included quota, they can purchase additional quota on a per-unit basis — creating a secondary revenue stream for the platform. This same pay-per-quota option was extended to free users, allowing them to feature listings without committing to a subscription.

Make an offer was added alongside the standard purchase flow — giving buyers the flexibility to negotiate pricing directly with suppliers. On the discovery side, a location filter with adjustable radius was added to the search page, letting buyers control how far they're willing to source materials from. On the seller side, a delivery radius was implemented — sellers define their delivery zone and buyers outside that range are prevented from completing checkout, avoiding failed deliveries and disputes.
